"Health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being."

- World Health Organization

Welcome to PsychiatryCircle

This is a safe space. One dedicated to health and wellness. Full of respect, competence, compassion. And free of judgement.

In medicine, we've made impressive strides across the millennia, but we mustn't pretend to have all the answers. Not all of life's problems have solutions. But there are almost always better ways to approach them.

At PsychCircle, we take an eclectic approach to whole health, piecing together the best of the past – a solid, therapeutic doctor-patient relationship for example – with the most current evidence-based practices. There has been tremendous progress in what we know about the brain and the body, and it is part of my job to remain up to date with these findings.

Critics rightly decry modern psychiatry’s focus on medicating symptoms. At PsychCircle, we recognize that there’s a little bit of crazy in all of us, and every pain or dysfunction need not be medicated. We use medication responsibly, as one part of a thoughtful treatment plan.

Health is not really a destination, but a lifelong journey. Much like happiness. What you do today affects your health (and happiness) not only in the future, but also now.

The distinction between mental and physical is arbitrary. Depression hurts. And ulcers are stressful.  With the brain in charge, “it’s all in your head” is neither reassuring, nor clear. And I have more than a “gut feeling” serotonin receptors in the bowels outnumber those in the brain by a wide margin.

This is a psychiatry clinic with your entire health at it's center. Your needs and your aspirations. You define the goals, and I bring focused treatment consistent with the standards of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

Sincerely,

Mohsin Ali, MD

Wait, I'm more than just degrees

Healthy scepticism

A childhood friend joked one day: "I may be wrong, but I am never in doubt." It was cool and confident and masculine, which I loved. But who was I kidding? That could never be my motto. In fact, I later retorted: "I may be right, but I can never be sure." The point is, I've been questioning and exploring for half a century now, looking for better ways of doing things.

The power of contagion

I believe good health is cantagious. I've been preaching this gospel for decades, with great success. My friends have better lipids than the national average. And only one of them sleeps on a couch. We invest in good things, like friendship, and vintage records. We prune shrubs. And we spread the word.

Interesting or good

I read fiction. Art speaks to me. And music too. I love to move, but also to find stillness. I spend many hours a week in nature. "Mountains or beach?" is a favorite question of mine. Even more so: "would you rather live an interesting life, or a good one?" (both - let's talk about how)

East meets West

While my formal education has had a decidedly Western tilt, I'm grounded in Eastern spirituality and thought. I've spent years living in both cultures, and I've traveled widely across five continents. I study science and use it every day, but science hardly explains everything does it? We all have our own stories to tell. Come, as you are...
